Arshad Ali

I am a Principal Product Manager at Microsoft, working on Microsoft Fabric and focusing on the Spark Runtime that empowers both Data Engineering and Data Science experiences. I am passionate about solving business problems with data through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and about how the power of data and analytics can change the competitive landscape when AI is applied in the right and timely manner.

Over the past several years, I have led the end‑to‑end product strategy and execution for Microsoft Fabric Spark Runtime, driving one of the most significant platform modernizations in Fabric’s data engineering stack. As a Principal Product Manager, I owned the roadmap, requirements, and cross‑team coordination for major runtime releases—including Fabric Runtime 2.0—spanning Spark, Delta Lake, libraries, governance, and infrastructure modernization. I worked closely with engineering, partner, and leadership teams to deliver complex upgrades (e.g., Spark 4.x, Delta 4.x, runtime governance, and release channels), unblock large‑scale customer migrations, and introduce extensibility through ISV and partner integrations such as geospatial analytics. I also led the strategy, roadmap, and delivery of various connectors and drivers (client-side connectors like JDBC, ODBC, and ADO.NET, as well as Spark connectors for SQL databases and Fabric Data Warehouse). On the Azure Synapse side, I led the planning and delivery of the latest Azure Synapse Spark Runtime.

Beyond shipping features, I focused on customer empathy, operational readiness, and clear communication—driving previews, bug bashes, documentation, and announcements—while aligning dozens of teams toward a shared goal of building a future‑ready, enterprise‑grade Spark platform in Microsoft Fabric.

Previously, I worked on Azure Synapse as part of Customer Success Engineering, engaging with strategic customers on digital transformation and business prioritization—particularly focused on data platform modernization and data analytics. I enabled customers to better utilize their data platform assets and drive new insights and scale from their investment in cloud solutions through batch or real-time data consumption and processing (Lambda or Kappa architecture), predictive analytics, and intuitive visualizations that empowered users to make smarter, faster decisions.

I am a technical thought-leader who manages and collaborates with a multi-stakeholder ecosystem — customers, partners, engineering, support, consulting, marketing, and sales.

I have authored 200+ technical articles published across MSSQLTips, Database Journal, and SQL Server Central, and co-authored the following books:
